Grooms's trinity of Lees suggests a deeper meaning than a Pop Art repetition of images. From left to right. Lee's face diminishes in size, his expression looks more grim, and the rebel flag behind him changes from red to Union blue. Some historians have said that Lee's brilliance as a general forced the Union to expend more time, human life, and material resources than could have been expected.
