After winning the Battle of Shiloh, Ulysses S. Grant led a lengthy and ultimately victorious siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1863, as well as the successful Chattanooga Campaign. In 1865 Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox, Virginia, ending the Civil War. In 1869 the hero general was elected president for the first of two terms.
