Anna Walinska’s self-portrait commemorates a memorable event when she performed with her dance teacher Nunez de Polanco at New York City’s Town Hall venue to benefit the Loyalist faction of the Spanish Civil War (1936–39). In the background is a portrait of their accompanist and friend Carlos García Montoya, the renowned Spanish flamenco guitarist. Walinska played an important role as a painter and art organizer in the New York cultural scene from the 1930s to 1960s.
