Tourism and landscape painting were intertwined in the United States almost since their inception. In the early 20th century the railroads followed up on this tradition to promote tourism with advertising posters promoting views from the train windows along their lines. One of the most famous series for the New York Central Railroad featured the scenery of the Hudson River.
