Saddle Up for HRM’s Summer of the Cowboy
Dear Friends of the HRM,
This summer, the Hudson River Museum is proud to present two stunning exhibitions that illuminate the depth, beauty, and complexity of Black life and culture across the United States. Opening today, May 29, Black Cowboys in America: Photographs by Ron Tarver and Robert Peterson: Journeys offer powerful and visually compelling experiences that expand the stories we tell through art and affirm the essential role Black artists and communities play in the story of American art.
Together, these exhibitions reveal how art can preserve overlooked histories while celebrating the people and communities who continue to shape the American experience. They also underscore the HRM’s commitment to elevating underrepresented voices and broadening the narratives that shape American art and culture.
In Black Cowboys in America, Pulitzer Prize–winning photographer Ron Tarver captures the enduring traditions and contemporary realities of Black cowboy culture—from ranches and rodeos in the expansive West to urban riding communities right here on the East Coast. Through more than forty remarkable photographs, the exhibition reveals a history that has too often been overlooked, while celebrating the resilience, pride, and individuality of the men, women, and children who carry these traditions forward today. As Tarver reflects, “Black cowboys have always been part of the American story. I wanted to make pictures that honored their lives, their labor, and their legacy.”
Opening on the same day, Robert Peterson: Journeys presents richly expressive portraiture by the nationally acclaimed Oklahoma-based artist. Peterson elevates everyday people into heroic figures, portraying mothers, fathers, siblings, and community members with dignity, warmth, and humanity. “I paint people I know and love,” Peterson says, “because their stories deserve to be seen and remembered.” His paintings broaden our understanding of intimate portraiture and invite reflection on family, identity, perseverance, and belonging.
We’re excited to offer an engaging lineup of accompanying programs throughout the summer, starting with a curator tour this Sunday, as well as artist talks, a program on equine therapy, and family programs—don’t miss the pony rides for the little ones on Sunday, August 1 (stay tuned for more info)—and as always at the HRM, opportunities for deeper conversation and connection with each other. There’s something very special about coming together to participate in all the ways we plan to bring these artworks to life.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support of the Hudson River Museum. You make it possible for us to present these meaningful exhibitions and programs that inspire dialogue, learning, and discovery for our entire community and to bring these important artists to you.
This year, it’s not only the Year of the Horse—it’s the Summer of the Cowboy at the HRM.
Saddle up!
