The large scale, unconventional pose, and soft, painterly focus of this photograph are clear indications that an ordinary portrait of Evelyn Nesbit was not Eickemeyer’s goal.

Nesbit’s photo was commissioned by architect Stanford White, who was scandalously smitten with the young beauty. The silk kimono and bear skin props express her sensuality as well as the aesthetic interests of a photographer who had already earned international recognition for artistic work.
