Garden landscapes, the combined product of human imagination and nature’s possibilities, have the power to transport us to places we may never have known existed. In his 2020 book, Garden Portraits: Experiences of Natural Beauty, photographer Larry Lederman, who has completed six books on landscape photography including several devoted to the New York Botanical Garden and one on Olana, explores sixteen varied and romantic examples. Gregory Long, President Emeritus of the NYBG, called his photographs “visual tone poems inspired by places he has come to love.” Join Larry Lederman and Laura Vookles, Chair of HRM’s Curatorial Department, for a virtual look at these natural fantasies and for a discussion of how landscape art is reflected in the aesthetics of gardens, both private and public, and their connection to the themes explored in the Landscape Art & Virtual Travel.
