Dr. Adrienne Baxter Bell, Professor of Art History at Marymount Manhattan College and author of George Inness and the Visionary Landscape, explores some of Inness’ finest moonrise paintings in the context of his desire to convey the inner, spiritual forces in nature through art. Influenced by the Hudson River School and the Barbizon School of painting, Inness believed that the role of art was not to represent the visible but capture the essence of nature’s invisible forces.

Following the event, Dr. Baxter Bell will sign copies of George Inness and the Visionary Landscape and George Inness: Writings and Reflections on Art and Philosophy, which are available for purchase in the Museum Shop.
