HRM Docent Ruth Weiner Honored with City of Yonkers’ Community Service Award

For decades, Ruth Weiner has been a mainstay of Yonkers, with a long history of dedicated service as an HRM docent and throughout the city. On April 8, 2021, Mayor Mike Spano acknowledged her many contributions with a 2021 Community Service Award during a virtual ceremony.

In nominating Weiner for the award, Saralinda Lichtblau, HRM’s Assistant Director, Education, described her as a compassionate docent who cared equally for every child who visited the Museum and encouraged them to explore and discover. “She has dedicated much of her life to helping others in service to the Yonkers community and to imparting her sense of wonder at life’s possibilities to all who have had the good fortune to spend time with her in the museum galleries, in a docent meeting, or over a cup of coffee,” Lichtblau stated. Weiner led tours and helped guide her fellow docents at the Hudson River Museum for 29 years. She has now earned the title of Docent Emerita.

A Brooklyn native, Weiner moved to Yonkers and worked for the Yonkers Housing Authority at the Schlobohm Houses as Chief Housing Accountant. A wife, mother, and grandmother, she also volunteered for many years as a Reading Buddy for WJCY at the former Foxfire School.

We thank Weiner for her countless contributions and congratulate her for this well-deserved honor.
