Performances
11:30am—Traditional Lion Dance
Welcome the Year of the Horse with an energetic lion dance performance. Two lions tell a lively story through movement, color, and rhythm, accompanied by the beat of the drum.
1pm—K-Pop Dance
Join the dancers of I LOVE DANCE for a high-energy K-Pop performance, interactive workshop, and mini contest. Learn choreography, performance techniques, and show off your moves in a fun, inclusive environment designed to get everyone on their feet.
1pm—Chinese Folk Dances and Tai Chi Demonstration
Celebrate Lunar New Year with a selection of solo and ensemble Chinese classical and folk dances and a graceful tai chi demonstration presented by the Greenburgh Evergreen Club.
3pm—Indonesian Gamelan Music and Dance
Experience the resonant sounds of Gamelan Dharma Swara as they perform traditional music for gamelan gender wayang, one of Bali’s oldest percussion ensembles. Known for its role in life-cycle rituals and entertainment, this Indonesian ensemble will open with a traditional Balinese welcoming dance.
4pm—Korean Heung-ch’um
The New York Korean Performing Arts Center presents Heung-ch’um, often called the “dance of ecstasy,” an improvisational Korean folk dance rooted in traditional gesture and movement. Known for its suspended balance pose—one foot grounded, the other extended—the dance conveys an inner, metaphysical joy through subtle motion rather than outward displays of acrobatic motion. The dancer’s use of the fan evokes birds or flowers in an abstract landscape. This culminating performance is followed by a Q&A with dancers Jiyoung Lee and Youngsil Um.
Workshops (12–4pm)
Origami, Calligraphy, and Yarn Workshops
Get creative in hands-on workshops celebrating the Year of the Horse. Learn origami, Chinese calligraphy and New Year couplets, and yarn crafts with Jeanhee Chung from OCA Asian Pacific American Advocates, award-winning calligrapher Ruiqi Li, and Xiawen Wang from the Greenburgh Evergreen Club.
Family Art Workshop: Galloping Horses
Celebrate the Year of the Horse by creating your own horse puppet using cardboard, paint, yarn, and wooden clothespins. Watch your handmade creation gallop into the New Year!
Family Art Workshop: Lunar New Year Lanterns
Create a colorful paper lantern to celebrate Lunar New Year and help light the winter skies and welcome the year ahead.
Family Art Workshop: Black Pearls of Wisdom
Celebrate Black History Month by honoring the powerful words of Black icons through collage. Create a vibrant mixed-media artwork using portraiture print-outs while reflecting on messages of resilience, creativity, and wisdom.
Family Art Workshop: Down to the Riverbed
Discover the Hudson River as a living, waking ecosystem. As the end of winter approaches, life stirs from riverbed to the surface, swimming, drifting, burrowing, and flying. Choose a favorite organism (or a few!) and help populate a floor-to-ceiling simulated water column with Hudson River creatures.
